Enterprise Project Portfolio Management (EPPM)

To build a balanced portfolio and reignite growth, companies must finely calibrate their current mix of assets, capabilities, and processes. We combine expertise in resource allocation, performance improvement, and financial analytics to strengthen companies and build sustainable value. Our rigorous methodology and proprietary tools help our clients plan and execute bold, agile, and decisive portfolio moves. Our breadth of expertise, proprietary tools, and experience make us uniquely suited to advise clients on which fine-grained combination of business segments and markets will create the most value.

We work closely with the world’s largest, most complex companies to implement full-scale project management transformations—from building technology foundations to digitizing core processes to implementing new-customer experiences. Our approach is based on a “build, operate, transfer” model: we help build the solution, operate it with our client to make sure it works while making the necessary adjustments, and then transfer capabilities so that the client itself can run the program.

Recognizing that changing the structure of an organization is highly disruptive, we work with clients on design change only if the benefits are significant. We begin by diagnosing the potential value of a redesign and then focus on the elements that will most effectively drive performance and health. These may include defining an organization archetype, designing a formal management structure and optimal spans of control, maximizing the value of the corporate center and cross-business functions, developing performance-management systems, defining the appropriate level of outsourcing, developing an internal knowledge marketplace, and galvanizing social networks.

Transformation and Implementation

A transformation is a massive undertaking. While speed is crucial, clients need to head in the right direction—where the value is. We identify the technologies, talent, capabilities, and processes that help our clients go beyond surface changes, to what’s needed for a full digital transformation. With a clear eye on value, we work closely with our clients to determine and prioritize how to transform the business and culture.

We help figure out which systems to build first to support the changes, align the leadership to reach agreement and clarity about how to proceed, and then coordinate the work of multiple cross-functional implementation teams. We also identify potential partners and providers that offer the right capabilities to help our clients meet their goals. We have combined a longstanding set of capabilities to help our clients implement their ideas:

  • Digital Labs: We believe that the best approach to digitizing a business is to focus on the processes that are needed to deliver a great customer journey. Transforming the business then relies on successfully scaling the capabilities needed to deliver and sustain many customer journeys. This approach allows us to help clients achieve massive improvements in cost, simplicity, speed, and end-user experience.

  • Burk Implementation: Our teams work on-site with clients to achieve long-term improvements and measurable bottom-line results. We help to strengthen and align the leadership, transform processes, optimize management practices, and build capabilities through rigorous, supportive coaching.

  • Business Technology: Our Strategy and Trend Analysis Center (STAC) helps leaders make sense of internal and external data on corporate performance, macroeconomic changes, and global and local trends so that executives can develop more robust strategies for creating value, identifying business opportunities, and pursuing growth.

To continue bringing clients the most powerful solutions for tackling their strategic challenges, we invest heavily in internal innovation and capability building. Our independent, fact-based perspective is anchored in large volumes of data, processed through advanced analytics to yield fast, accurate, and deep insights.
